❦23 How Do You Stay Sane?
Staying sane while working in the sex industry is kind of the whole purpose of this book. Put it this way, wealthy women, with all their jewels, imported cars, luxury mansions, and designer clothes, go insane if they are not happy or are stuck in a bad marriage. College educated women go nuts if they are stuck in a dead end job with no avenue of promotion. But these women are accepted in society and they can talk about their woes with their family, church, boyfriend, husband and friends, to vent their feelings and get perspective. Sex work is one of the hardest jobs on the sanity because you are brought up to believe it is morally wrong, your clients think you are beneath them, and you can't talk to anybody about it outside of the industry to vent your feelings and get perspective. You are basically alone on a tiny island and your only way off the island is to set goals and work towards them, like a little boat that you have to row across a great big ocean to get back to the mainland. It is vital that you have somebody to talk too to survive and do well in this game, but you can't tell your family, boyfriend, friends, quilting circle or husband, because they've also been brought up to believe that prostitution is morally wrong. Even if they say it's OK, it really isn't and it really does make them feel uncomfortable or weirded out, and no matter what they say or what kind of smile is on their face, your relationship is forever changed, and possibly permanently or a little bit damaged. So your only choices for a shoulder to cry on and to get advice are sister and brother sew workers, management, social workers, or therapists. Even as a former sex worker myself, when a girlfriend confides to me she's an escort or stripper I automatically feel differently about her, not in a bad way, but not in a good way either. It's a total betrayal and it hurts me that I'm this way, but is what I'm programmed to feel. It's the same for most of the population and you either have to accept it and work around it, or else risk consequences for the rest of your life. It is OK for women to have secrets; men have had their secrets for millennia. Work to reach your goals get out of the industry, then you can put it in a box in a cupboard in the back of your mind and forget about it or deal with it in therapy. If you are young in your teens or twenties you may think I'm tripping, but when you reach your late twenties or early thirties (the new twenties) it hits you like a ton of bricks falling off a Mac truck at high speed. Sometimes it starts earlier, sometimes later. You beat yourself up for ruining you
